Environmental Assessment & Planning

Environmental assessment and planning is a multi-faceted discipline and requires responsiveness, working under tight timelines and a broad working knowledge and thorough comprehension of both regulatory and client requirements and expectations.

Wapta personnel have developed skills through work on a variety of projects, which allow us to provide valuable services and expertise to support our client’s needs related to environmental assessment and planning for projects.

Route selection and Siting

Route selection and siting is a critical component of new developments, which, if done properly, can result in significant time and cost savings for a project.

Wapta personnel have extensive working knowledge of regulatory requirements and guidelines, industry standards and general environmental considerations, which allows us to provide support and guidance to clients regarding route selection and siting. Wapta has the ability to provide services and support to clients through desktop and field based aspects of route selection and siting for linear developments, individual facility, or multiple site programs.

Biophysical Assessments

Industry standards, regulatory requirements and guidelines, and corporate responsibility can all drive a need for a variety of biophysical assessments and reporting to be completed in advance of, during, or following development of a project.

With the expertise and knowledge Wapta personnel have from education and experience on multiple projects, along with the network of associates and sub-consultants we have relationships with, Wapta can provide field and reporting services for a wide variety of biophysical assessments.

Regulatory Liaison and Permitting

A major component of project development involves the work required to consult with regulators to prepare and submit the necessary notification, permitting or other documents and applications.

Wapta has experience working with numerous regulators for a variety of Projects across western Canada. We are familiar with and capable of supporting all aspects of regulator consultation and preparation of documents and forms required for application and permitting purposes.

Environmental Inspection

During construction activities Environmental Protection Plans must be implemented and regulatory requirements met to minimize impacts to the environment. An Environmental Inspector is often the best resource available to help support implementation of environmental protection measures while construction is taking place to ensure regulatory compliance and protection of environmental features.

Wapta has provided Environmental Inspection services to a variety of clients for pipeline construction projects of varying size in western Canada. Our knowledge, experience and approach to ensuring implementation of environmental protection measures while considering client goals has allowed us to be part of several successful construction projects.

Post-Construction Assessments

Following construction activities there is often a regulatory requirement or client desire to assess the efficacy of environmental protection measures implemented during construction or determine if any new environmental issues exist. Post-construction assessments can support regulatory filings or help support maintenance and reclamation efforts to ensure that environmental features are managed appropriately during operational activities.

Wapta has completed post-construction assessments for clients on major pipeline projects to satisfy approval conditions of the National Energy Board. Wapta has also completed post construction assessments for provincially-regulated projects to assess environmental issues and to support ongoing and future operations and maintenance activities.

Reclamation and Repairs

Whether issues are present following construction and need to be addressed to allow for operations, or issues are present and need to be resolved to allow for decommissioning of a site or facility, reclamation and repair efforts are often required to prevent issues from worsening or to meet regulatory requirements.

Wapta has staff with the appropriate credentials and experience to successfully support and conduct reclamation repair activities to meet the requirements of our clients and regulators.
